4 days in Mexico City

Aztec ruins, leafy colonias and tacos at every hour. A 4-day plan.

Built on the ruins of Tenochtitlan, Mexico City is one of the world's great cultural capitals: more museums than almost any city on earth, a thriving art scene, and a street-food culture to rival anywhere.

Day by day

  1. Day 1: Centro Histórico

See the Zócalo, Templo Mayor and Palacio de Bellas Artes, then tacos al pastor for dinner.

  2. Day 2: Chapultepec

Spend the morning at the Museo Nacional de Antropología, visit the castle and dine in Roma or Condesa.

  3. Day 3: Teotihuacán

Climb the pyramids early (or float above them by balloon) and catch lucha libre in the evening.

  4. Day 4: Coyoacán and Xochimilco

Visit Casa Azul (booked ahead) and Coyoacán's market, then ride a trajinera in Xochimilco.

Make it work

  • Best months: Oct–Apr. See the season calendar.
  • Book ahead: the most popular sights and restaurants, especially in peak season.
  • Where to eat along the way: Contramar, Pujol, El Huequito.
  • Getting around: The metro is extremely cheap but crowded at rush hour.

Short on time, or staying longer?

With less time, keep the first days and skip the day trip. With more, add a slower day for a neighbourhood from our best areas to stay, or choose more from the full list of things to do.

Opening days and times change, and some sights close one day a week. Check before you go. Last reviewed October 2026.
